TUESDAY 5 DECEMBER 2006 9.30am-5pm

The Postgraduate Centre,
Queen’s University, Belfast

Chaired by Dr. Fiona Magowan (QUB, Anthropology), Dr. Chandana Mathur (NUI Maynooth, Anthropology)

This one day symposium examined contemporary issues in postgraduate research between MA and PhD students based at Queen’s, NUI Maynooth and Trinity College Dublin. It was held at Queen’s University and involved a series of postgraduate presentations and discussions by Anthropology, Ethnomusicology and Sociology postgraduate students from the three universities in order to examine critical issues arising in postgraduate research and writing.

The symposium aimed to:

  • Enhance postgraduate student awareness of and potential for new research synergies in north-south collaboration.
  • Encourage greater discussion between postgraduate research students working in the same or related disciplines in the north and south of Ireland.
  • Assist in understanding the ethical and methodological dilemmas that postgraduate research poses in relation to particular research topics and problems.
  • Develop postgraduate student skills in writing and presenting for an audience of peers from other universities. The presentations and discussions will be chaired by staff representatives from each of the three universities listed above.
